Sturgeon Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse
Friday August 28, 2026 will be the Sturgeon Full Moon in Pisces and a lunar eclipse!! This will be a partial lunar eclipse but it will cover 96% of the visible moon and the moon will appear in shades of coppery red!! Two cool things happening in one night. Let’s start with the Sturgeon full moon.
This is an illustrative view of how the moon will appear at peak for the lunar eclipse August 28
Why is it called the Sturgeon Moon? The Sturgeon Moon is about abundance. In late Summer, crops for corn, peppers, tomatoes, watermelon and blackberries are at their peak. Sturgeon are also abundant this time of year and Native Americans fished for them during this key time.
New data suggests lake sturgeon can live up to 400 years!! Previous data led researchers to believe they lived up to 150 years which is still pretty impressive. These ancient fish have been alive for over 150 million years.
Now a little more about the lunar eclipse, which happens when the Earth’s shadow covers the moon. The moonrise will start 7:44pm Eastern Time Thursday night in the east-southeast direction. The eclipse will peak at 12:14am Eastern Time on Friday morning. Seeing it will depend on how clear the skies are that night. We hope you enjoy the beautiful show in the sky. ❤️
